Moisture, packaging and storage: protecting granule quality
Practical control points from receipt through onward delivery to the buyer.
Updated: 7 min read

Moisture protection starts before unloading
Mineral fertilizers should be stored in a closed, dry area protected from precipitation, groundwater and direct sunlight. The warehouse and packaging condition should be checked before receipt.
Damaged packaging, condensation or an unclean floor can affect flowability and physical product quality even when the chemical composition remains unchanged.
Distributor control points
Good records connect the lot, COA, receipt date, storage location and onward delivery. This keeps quality and documentation traceable throughout the distribution chain.
- a dry and clean receiving area
- visual inspection of packaging and pallets
- product separation and clear lot identification
- moisture protection during loading and transport
Receiving goods without losing traceability
Before unloading, compare the vehicle, transport documents, product, quantity and lot markings with the delivery notice. Photographs of the received condition can be a useful part of the receipt record.
If torn bags, wet pallets or other deviations are found, segregate and record the goods before further movement. Agree the next steps with the supplier and follow the applicable SDS/MSDS.
Organising the warehouse
Keep the product on a stable, clean and dry surface, separated from incompatible materials and heat sources. The layout should allow packaging inspection, safe handling and stock rotation.
The oldest suitable lot is normally planned for first dispatch while its identification remains intact. Stacking height, spacing and handling should follow the manufacturer's instructions, packaging type and local safety rules.
Loading and onward delivery
The vehicle and loading area should be clean, dry and suitable for the product. During rain or snow, arrange loading so that the packaging is not left exposed.
Before departure, recheck quantity, lot, packaging condition and shipment documents. This connects the warehouse record with the specific customer and destination.
- vehicle cleanliness and dryness check
- load protection and correct securing
- COA, delivery note and required safety documents
- record of loading time and responsible person
When to stop handling
Visible moisture, an unidentified lot, contamination, serious packaging damage or missing safety documentation are reasons to pause handling until the responsible person assesses the situation.
This overview does not replace the SDS/MSDS for the specific product, the manufacturer's instructions or local storage and occupational-safety rules.
